The latest YouGov poll for the Sun shows that, for the first time, UKIP has jumped ahead of the Liberal Democrats.
[adsenseyu1]Although this is just one poll it shows how far the LibDems have fallen in the eyes of the electorate and that they may well now be looking around for an alternative to the ‘big three’ (OK the ‘big two and a half’).
The poll put Labour 11 points ahead with 43%, Conservatives in second place with 32%, UKIP in third place with 9% and the LibDems now in fourth with 8%.
YouGov does point out in the poll that these sorts of surveys do have a margin of error of about plus or minus 3%. So this could be a rogue sample. What will be a better indicator is if a trend develops over time.
But with the strong feeling in the country that we should have a referendum on what our relationship with the EU should look like as well as our overly strong ties with what looks like being a failed currency we could well start seeing a further gains for a political party that actually has no UK MPs at present, but it is thought that they diverted votes away from the Tories the last time round.
But there are definitely rumours circulating that there are Tory MPs in ‘talks’ with UKIP, something that the UKIP leader, Nigel Farage, could neither confirm nor deny when asked about it by the BBC.
UKIP has already benefited from a couple of defections, a few more and it could start a veritable charge from the Tory benches to UKIP!
